ABOUT OUR LITTLE COMPANY
Where our story began
When my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, a dear friend of mine made him a heat pack. It was used to comfort him physically. Time and time again, the family put it in the microwave and dropped essential oils on it to comfort and calm him. It helped with breathing, warmth, and simply brought him temporary relief and refreshment. The cancer progressed, and he died a year later in his home.
I will never forget the moment when they carried him away. I took my daughter to the room to distract her from what was happening. However, my little one was not ignorant of such hurt. Just a year before, the best aunty in the world also died of cancer. While they took her grandpa away, my little one rushed out of the room. Just then, I saw a glimpse of comfort. As my eight-year-old passed the room in which her grandpa once lay, my husband came out of the room at the same time, and all of a sudden he swooped our little girl into his arms and embraced her ever so tightly. My eyes and heart will never forget the sweet embrace in such a broken time.
A move, a camper trailer, and an idea
Three years later, my husband, four little ones, and I moved! We uprooted and left our family, friends, church, and job and on December 27, 2020, we took a leap of faith and moved to New Mexico. The Lord put it in our hearts to start a nonprofit called “Faith Without Borders.” While looking for a home, we lived in our travel trailer. We searched for a house, yet every listing sold within minutes. In the trailer, some nights the temperature dropped to 19 degrees. I decided to make heat packs for my little ones to keep them warm.
The spark
I knew it wouldn’t fix our situation, but maybe it would bring a small comfort to their hearts, a tad bit of refreshment. Making the heat packs helped set a different tone in our little trailer home; it became something they looked forward to. From that time forth, it has been in my heart to make heat packs for those who need a small encouragement and practical refreshment. This is the spark that started Desert Aroma, our small business!
P.S. We have a house now and just to let you know living in a trailer is doable even with six people.
